5 Netflix Movies You Need to Be Watching

Written by Michele Renee Regallie

Have you ever found yourself sitting on your couch spending close to an hour or two searching for a movie on Netflix that is “just right”? With so many choices it can be hard to find the perfect movie for your movie night. The movie has to be that wonderful blend of not too comical, maybe a little action, not to cheesy, and of course great production value. Not to mention, if you choose the wrong movie then you just wasted up to two hours trying to see if the movie gets any better.

I have a solution for you! I have gathered 5 great movies that you need to be watching right now! These are definitely movies that you will want to revisit over and over again.

Action Thriller
Directed by: Vicky Jewson
Starring: Noomi Rapace, Sophie Nèlisse, Indira Varma

What is this movie about:

Zoe’s father dies leaving her with a stepmother, Indira Varma, who never really understood her. She is then sent to a self-guarding smart house in the Middle East while her stepmother brokers an oil deal for the company her father left her and Zoe, played by Sophie Nèlisse. Guarded by Sam, Noomi Rapace, Zoe finds solace and a close friend while they fight for their lives in this heated women-led action-packed film.

Why this movie is great:

I absolutely love this movie! I love the concept of having women leads in a crazy action movie. This movie centers around mothers and daughters and the theme is perfectly reflected in the relationships between each leading character. Not to mention, all of the women are badasses! There a definitely a few twists and turns in this movie, and the character development is a perfect contrast to all of the chaos happening on the screen. What’s really interesting about this movie, is that this is based on a real story about Jacquie Davis, a real-life bodyguard.

When to watch:

You should definitely check this movie out if you want to see some amazing women in action and if you are in the mood for a great story line attached to a fast-paced action movie. This is a great movie for those solo movie nights.

Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened

Directed by Chris Smith

What is this movie about:

Have you ever heard of the colossal failure music festival that was happening on a “deserted” island? Well, now you have. The Fyre Festival was supposed to be the biggest and best music festival of the decade. Yet it never actually came to fruition. It had tons of models and actors promoting it on Instagram and blew up overnight, yet they couldn’t even manage to make their dream come true. This festival ended in a storm of destruction both physically and financially.

Why this movie is great:

This documentary about the Fyre festival is hilarious. Hulu happens to have a documentary out about this one as well, but I personally prefer Netflix’s version. They build the story from the ground up creating a clear and objective point of view of the events that lead up to the horrendous night. I left the movie feeling horrible for those who actually paid money, attended this event and ultimately ended up being scammed out of thousands of dollars.

When to watch this:

This documentary is great for a movie night with friends or for a wine night. It is truly eye-opening and the people featured in it are absolutely ridiculous. I would definitely recommend watching this with a friend for a good laugh.

IO Last On Earth

Directed by: Jonathan Helpert
Starring: Margaret Qualley, Anthony Mackie, Danny Huston

What this movie is about:

A young scientist thinks she is the last human on Earth in a post-apocalyptic setting. She finds out there is another person still alive. Time is running out for her to leave the planet, and she has to link up with the other survivor to the colony in space. They both race to find a way to get to the last shuttle on Earth.

Why this movie is great:

Honestly, I have yet to watch this movie. But I am beyond excited for this. Netflix makes amazing sci-fi movies and I have no doubt the level will be on par with this film as well. What makes me more excited than seeing Anthony Mackie in a Netflix original, is the concept that there are only two remaining humans on Earth who were trying to save the planet from dying. I am sure that the chemistry between the two leads will be just as exciting!

When to watch this:

This is definitely a good date night movie. This is something to contemplate and discuss with your other half right after it ends or during. Not to mention, who knows what kind of romance might brew in-between the scenes.

Directed by: Brent Craft
Starring: Stephanie Simbari, Allie Gallerani, Zak Steiner

What this movie is about:

Two best friends since childhood find themselves drifting apart when one of them gets a boyfriend. One of them suddenly finds herself in a deep depression not quite ready to face life without her friend.

Why this movie is great:

If you love cheesy comedy movies about friends in college, then this is one to add to the list. The writing isn’t quite riveting but the dirty jokes embedded into the script are what makes me love this movie more than I expected.

When to watch this:

This is definitely a wine night, girl’s night, or movie night with your best friend, kind of movie. While you can definitely enjoy this alone, it’s always fun to pair up with your bestie to reminisce over times where you found yourselves drifting and what you did to overcome it.

Action Thriller
Directed by: Jonas Ȃukerland
Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Vanessa Hudgens

What this movie is about:

Have you seen John Wick? No? Well, this is the same, only with Mads Mikkelsen in all of his glory. An assassin, Mads Mikkelson, weeks away from retirement, finds himself becoming the hunted instead of the hunter. He finds his neighbor kidnapped and sets out to seek revenge.

Why this movie is great:

Mads Mikkelson, need I say more? Not to mention, Vanessa Hudgens contributes an amazing performance to this otherwise outrageous John Wick look-a-like. If you love action then this is definitely one to check out! The script was something that kept me hooked throughout the entire movie.

When to watch this:

This movie is perfect to watch when you want to get pumped up. It is such a fast-paced movie with so many twists and turns, it will keep you on the edge of your seat!
